Holiday Storage for Every Budget

As the holiday season comes to a close, it's nearing time to take the decorations down (ok…if that doesn’t happen until mid-January, we’re not here to judge!) While this task might not excite you, it’s actually a great opportunity to create simple systems of organization to store and protect your treasured items and decorations until next year.

Depending on your space, inventory, and budget, you can opt for a few different storage solutions. To make it easy on you, we’ve put together the most effective (and our favorite!) storage products and methods for all things holiday decor, no matter your lifestyle needs.

As you begin, keep in mind that the most effective way to organize your holiday decorations is storing them by category. It’ll save you the hassle of finding what you need when you decorate next year, and chances are that like-items will fit well together anyways. Here are some common categories and how you can store them:

Lights

Strings of lights can easily get tangled and mangled in storage. To avoid the mess next year, take a few minutes to store your lights the right way, and be sure to keep each string separate. There are different ways to get this done, and it doesn’t matter which you prefer, as long as you’re avoiding throwing them all in a bin together.

Ornaments

For many, ornaments are the most precious decoration there is. Many are passed down or have sentimental value, so it’s imperative to store these in a way that will keep them safe and organized. No matter the size or shape, there are budget-friendly solutions that will protect any ornament as it’s stored throughout the year.

Gift Wrap

You may want to keep your holiday gift wrap with your entire gift wrap collection, and if that’s the case, consider creating a designated space in your home for all of them that you can easily access. No matter where you’re storing your holiday gift wrap, you likely already own items around the house that you can commission to organize these items.

Decorations

As many holiday items are stored for an entire year, it’s important to protect these items from extreme temperatures and rough conditions. Finding durable containers is key here, but finding creative ways to cushion your items inside the bins is equally important.

China and Glassware

If you have china and glassware that you dedicate specifically to the holiday season, these fragile items are especially important to protect in storage! The goal in storing these is to prevent breakage, prolong the life of your items, and prevent weather and temperature related wear and tear. These systems are a great way to keep your items cushioned and dust-free, so you can easily store them in a buffet, the garage, or even the attic.

  1. Store glasses in wine boxes

  2. Use paper plates or newspaper in between plates & bowls to cushion

  3. China storage containers

Regardless of the storage methods you opt for, we highly recommend finishing them off with adhesive labels to ensure that you make it easy to quickly find what you need next year. Once you have all items contained and labeled, make sure to stack bins with the heaviest items on the bottom and lightest on the top. Keep in mind which items you will need access first (or most often) and keep these bins in easy-to-access areas. To see how we use some of these techniques, check out our reel here. Happy storing!
